Choosing a powder coating color and finish
A color code is only part of the finish. For production parts, tell us the gloss, texture and where the part will live, and we will match the right Cardinal powder to it.
Gloss
Powders run from flat and matte through satin and semi-gloss to high gloss. Higher gloss shows more surface texture and handling marks; lower gloss hides minor surface variation and fingerprints.
Texture
Smooth finishes suit most enclosures and brackets. Fine textures and wrinkle finishes hide surface flaws on weldments and castings and stand up to handling. Metallic and specialty finishes are available for visible parts; ask before you specify one on a large run.
Indoor or outdoor
Chemistry matters as much as color. Epoxy and hybrid powders are for interior parts; polyester and superdurable polyester powders hold color and gloss outdoors. Our guide to Cardinal powder codes explains how the product prefixes map to interior and exterior use.
How to specify color on a quote
- Cardinal code if you already have one from a previous run.
- RAL number for most commercial and European-standard colors.
- AMS-STD-595 number for government and defense parts. See our 595 color guide.
- A physical sample when the color has to match an existing part. On-screen colors are not reliable for matching.
Stock colors keep lead times short. Custom colors are made to order in batches, which adds time and a minimum quantity of powder, so they make the most sense on production and repeat runs. See Cardinal color options or send your color with a quote request.
