Processes
Powder coating
Electrostatic powder coating, cured typically around 400°F at the part (metal temperature), depending on the powder. Cardinal’s standard powders cure in about 10 minutes at 400°F. Our process is built for metal parts that can be electrically grounded and withstand the cure temperature. Details are on our production powder coating page.
Industrial liquid painting
Wet paint for parts that need a specific primer and topcoat system or a coating powder cannot provide. We paint to the specification on your drawing or PO.
Mil-spec liquid coatings
Subcontract finishing for defense and government programs, painted to the spec your prime flows down. Work we have done includes:
- CARC topcoats
- Aerospace epoxy primer and polyurethane topcoat systems
- AMS-STD-595 color matches
For CARC callouts, such as MIL-DTL-53039 or MIL-DTL-64159, we apply QPL-listed CARC materials per MIL-DTL-53072. Aerospace callouts, such as MIL-PRF-23377 primer or MIL-PRF-85285 topcoat, are painted to the spec, type and class on your drawing or PO. Each job is quoted to its spec. See mil-spec and CARC painting for how we handle flow-down.
Line and capacity
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Line | Batch line, no conveyor; parts hung on rolling racks |
| Booths | Multiple powder booths; liquid painting done in-house |
| Oven | Large batch oven |
| Part size | Up to roughly a large cabinet or long frame. Send dimensions and weight to confirm fit. |
| Throughput | 500 to 2,000+ parts a day |
| Run size | Built for batches of hundreds to thousands; small jobs accepted with a small minimum charge |
Throughput depends mostly on how many parts fit on a rack and how much hand masking each needs. Small unmasked brackets run at the high end. Large cabinets, long weldments and parts with many plugged holes run lower.
Surface prep
All prep is done in-house, as the part and finish require:
- Solvent wipe and degrease
- Multi-stage wash with rinses
- Outgas pre-bake for castings, galvanized steel and heavy weldments
- Masking of threads, bores, mating faces and ground points
- Plugging of tapped and through holes
- Sanding
Abrasive blasting is done by a blasting partner and coordinated inside a coating job, on the same quote and PO. We do not offer blasting on its own. See prep and masking for how to call out masking on a drawing.
Coatings and materials
| Coating | Material |
|---|---|
| Powder | Cardinal powders, with the chemistry matched to the part’s service environment (exterior, interior, chemical exposure) |
| Liquid primers and topcoats | Per the specification on your drawing or PO |
| Mil-spec liquid | QPL-listed materials where the spec requires them |
We coat with Cardinal powders. Cardinal Paint and Powder has a branch in Denver.
Color standards
- Cardinal: stock colors and custom matches from the Cardinal line.
- RAL: give us the RAL number and gloss level.
- AMS-STD-595: give us the five-digit number. The first digit sets sheen, so 37038 is flat black and 17038 is gloss black.
A commercial coating matched to an AMS-STD-595 chip is a color match, not CARC. If the part needs CARC, the callout must name the CARC specification as well as the color.
Value-added services
- Masking and plugging in-house, to your drawing.
- Abrasive blasting, coordinated with a partner as part of a coating job.
- Screen printing, coordinated: we coat, ship to our print partner, get the parts back and deliver. One quote, one PO.
- Pickup and delivery in Denver and Pueblo by arrangement, per job. See powder coating for Denver manufacturers.
Quality and documentation
- On higher-volume production programs, we follow the customer’s QC procedure.
- Certificates of Conformance are available on request.
- Coating spec, color and masking come from your drawing or PO and are quoted to that requirement.
If your program requires a specific quality-system registration, special-process approval or first-article package, raise it with the RFQ so we can confirm fit before you release parts.

What to send for a quote
Include the drawing with coating callout, color and masking notes; quantity per release and annual volume; substrate, dimensions and weight; any QC procedure or CoC wording; and the required ship date. Our coating callout checklist shows a complete callout. When you are ready, send your drawings for a quote.
Common questions
What is the largest part you can coat?
Our batch oven handles parts up to roughly the size of a large cabinet or a long frame. Size limits depend on shape and how the part hangs, so send the overall dimensions and weight with your drawing and we will confirm fit before you quote it internally.
How many parts can you run in a day?
Typically 500 to 2,000 or more parts a day across the line. For an estimate on your part, send the drawing with dimensions, quantity per release and masking callouts, and we will tell you how many fit on a rack and what a realistic daily rate looks like.
What is your standard lead time?
About one week for standard jobs. Custom colors, outgas pre-bakes, multi-coat systems and coordinated blasting or screen printing can add time, and we confirm the lead time with the quote.
Do you provide a Certificate of Conformance?
Yes, on request. Tell us at quote time what the CoC needs to reference, such as your part number, PO, coating specification and color, and we will include it with the shipment.
Can you work to our inspection procedure?
Yes. On higher-volume production programs we follow the customer's QC procedure. Send it with the RFQ so the inspection steps are built into the quote.
Is there a minimum order?
We have a small minimum charge per job. Our pricing and scheduling are built around batch runs of hundreds to thousands of parts, but we do take smaller jobs.
